You've already made your travel plans, your neighbor's already in possession of a key to your place to bring in food for the pets and water the plants. All your stuff is packed up, you've gone out to buy travel pillows, and you're ready to show yourself at the airport. You are happy. Remember that everything on your person, in your bags, or in your hands can be looked over in detail before embarking. Checked luggage can also be opened and searched. The ordinary items that you take for granted as far as getting through security goes become extraordinarily difficult when dealing with a security inspector. Toiletries in gel, fluid or aerosol can be confiscated, including such seemingly harmless items such as shampoo or perfume.
But fear not. You can do things to make your departure easier. The first thinkg to remember to do is to buy travel pillows. You may need them after this. But to get you through it with the least possible hassle, preparations can be made as you approach the dreaded metal detectors. Take everything out of your pockets. Take your shoes off. Remember to remove accessories like your belt, watch, or earrings. Sometimes these will trigger the machine, sometimes not. But why take the chance of a holdup?
Those toiletries are easily obtained almost everywhere in the world, so don't bother trying to get any through. Just get them on arrival at your destination. This also prevents the foam and the fluids from possibly shifting during the flight and dousing the contents of your bag. This can be especially annoying if you buy travel pillows and have them in the same bag. Nothing is worse than a wet pillow to rest your head on, particularly one that wreaks of cologne.
Something else you can do just for the sake of speed is to place the smaller contents of your pockets in a clear, plastic bag. That way, as soon as they come out the other side of the scanner, you can just pick it up and be on your way instead of picking things up one by one. Things like jewelry, loose change, and cell phones can be a bother to have to stand there and rearrange in your pockets.
Remember that some common items in your home are always, always, without exception not going to be allowed on the plane, and furthermore, will provide you with no end to the hassle if you try and get them aboard. These include scissors (yes, your tiny, grooming scissors too,) metal nail files, nail clippers, and knitting needles are even forbidden. Luckily for all of us, if you buy travel pillows you can always get those through. But if what you want to bring looks sharp and metallic, don't even bother. You can easily purchase these when you land. And as an added bonus, you' ll free up valuable packing space by eliminating them from your packing list. All the more room if you have elected to buy travel pillows.
Lastly, be sure to think twice about some of the kid's toys that you may just throw in your suitcase without thinking. Things like plastic guns, even if they look like toys to you, can cause problems. So leave them at home.
You' ll save time, arguments, and hassle if you just remember where you are going and plan accordingly. A more pleasant trip is easy enough to achieve with just a bit of preparation. It's important to think ahead, have an idea of what you need and what is permissible, and buy travel pillows for the long flight.
